The programme
was organized in Thimphu,
Bhutan, 4-10 October, by
the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New
Delhi, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Bhutan and
WHO Country Offices for India
and Bhutan. The focus areas of the programme
were: (a) Healthcare Human Resource Management; (b) Financial Management for
Doctors; (c) Hospital Logistics Management; (d) Quality Dimensions in
Hospital Care; (e) Medico-legal and Ethical Concerns; and (f) Emerging
Trends.
Dr Shakti
Kumar Gupta, Head of the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS
initiated this capacity building effort through a series of HxMDPs launched in 2007.
HxMDP is designed to enhance senior
healthcare executive’s ability to carry out higher-level managerial functions
in healthcare organizations, and inculcate skills to understand the internal
and external environments. HxMDP is aimed at senior doctors in leadership positions
in medical and healthcare organizations.
It has benefited 110 senior level healthcare executives of the South
East Asian Region. The programme provides a single platform for senior doctors
in management positions to exchange ideas, understand and discuss important
developments in the field of Hospital Management. It has been attended by
Deans, Principals, Professors and Departmental Heads of Medical Colleges,
Directors and Medical Superintendents, and senior doctors from the Health
Systems Development Projects of various state governments.
This was the 5th HxMDP organized by AIIMS.
The Health Minister of Bhutan,
H.E. Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa, inaugurated the programme
and expressed his pleasure for the bilateral collaboration between the two
nations. He stressed the importance of
this programme since it addresses the need for
improving the managerial capacity in healthcare to lasting improvement in
delivery of the services. He was accompanied
by H.E. the Ambassador of India to Bhutan,
Mr. Pavan K Varma;
the Health Secretary of Bhutan,
Dr. Gado Tshering; WHO
Representative to Bhutan, Dr HSB Tennakoon; senior officials, stakeholders;
and the media. Dr. Shakti
Kumar Gupta presided over the function and advised the participants to
actively interact and benefit the most from this programme,
which is a fertile ground for rich exchange of experience and ideas. Dr Salim
Habayeb, WHO Representative to India, served as faculty. Dr RT Anand, AIIMS, effectively facilitated
day-to-day organization; and DK Sharma, Medical Superintendent,
AIIMS presided over the Valedictory function of the programme
on 10 October 2009. The next programme of this series is scheduled for March/April
2010.
